Google 'Google' at Google!

(* Important fact to know before reading; I have no relation to any particular company!)

Everyone knows that 'Google' is one of the most renowned search engines in the world. Over the years Google has gotten so famous that people even use the term as a verb. For an example if you're looking for an information about something, a person next to you might ask whether you have 'Googl-ed it or not'. Nobody really says 'have you Yahoo-ed it?' (although I love Yahoo as a search engine!) or ''did you try Dogpil-ing it?" (my apology if you do use such expressions). Of course, everyone has their own preference and taste and some might favor other search engines over Google. What I really want to say by bringing up this example is that, just by looking at this particular phenomenon I think it is pretty cool how Google is directly and indirectly affecting people.

To me, as a student currently studying graphic design in college, I find one thing in particular very fascinating and that is what Google does with their logo. Of course, Google's logo is already well known to many people because of the fame already brought by the functions of search engine, but what seems so special about the logo is that it is frequently updated with different variations of logos depending on the holidays or the special/memorable events of the day.

As one picture is better than thousand words, here are some examples of Google's logo variation.
In addition, here is the one that actually got me started writing this post.

With its different logo variations, Google does a great job reminding people of what makes that day special. Although other search engines attempt to change their logos time to time as Google does, Google's logo variations are not limited to national holidays which makes it more interesting. The one right above was today's logo at http://www.google.com/ remembering Michael Jackson's birthday. Although two 'o's are replaced by an image of shiny feet, the logo still reads as 'Google', and to most people it is also clear that the legs belong to Michael Jackson. Personally, I am quite amazed by the 'Google-effect' that allows me to read this as Google, notice that it has something to do with Michael Jackson and how the original logo is flexible enough to work with different subjects all the time. Google's logos have suggested me an idea that flexibility is not only needed in people but in designs as well, for designs may also face situations where they need to adjust to different occasions and audience. Although the logo is rather simple consisting 4 different colors; red, blue, yellow, and green, and perhaps the different versions of logos are possible because the original logo itself is so simple, but the fact that it can create hundreds of different kinds out of a single design while still being able to transfer its meaning to people is quite remarkable.
Lastly, there are tons of fun and interesting Google logos that's been presented over the years, and you'll be able to find more of them when you "Google 'Google (logos)' at Google!''
